Bosco Boys, Rehabilitation Centre, Nairobi (2010 - 2012)The aim of the project is to make education accessible to street children and children from very poor families, to enable them to finish primary school, to support their study at a secondary school, a vocational college or at a university. Education is preceded by social rehabilitation of the boys after their street life, wedded to criminality or drugs and their adaptation to society. It proceeds in cooperation with psychologists and Salesians in the school and also with educators who are trained for work with problem children. From November 2010 when the project started 360 children attended the Bosco Boys primary school. Every day children are transported to school by bus. The tuition was paid, children were provided with uniforms, textbooks and school equipment. The main subjects are English, Svahili, maths and science. In April a tutorial focused on HIV prevention and self-care attended by 150 children took place. There was also a seminar "Social rehabilitation of families" and 10 families were trained in HIV prevention and taking care of HIV positive children. Social worker regularly attended slums in the neighbourhood where street children come from. The aim is to communicate with parents of children in Bosco Boys, to learn about the situation in the family and to handle homecoming of children. The project will last till February 2012 and its result should be to educate children as much as possible, to provide them with further education and the cooperation of parents.
