Because Bread Is Needed

Because Bread Is Needed

Basic information

Over the past year, the war between Israel and Palestine has led to a dramatic deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Palestine, with the most vulnerable groups of the population suffering the most — children, women, the elderly and people with disabilities. Thanks to you we were able to support the distribution of bread through the Salesian bakery in Bethlehem and to become part of a story of solidarity and humanity.

Bethlehem is a city in the West Bank, about 8 kilometres south of Jerusalem. It is the capital of the Bethlehem Governorate of the Palestinian Authority and an important centre of Palestinian tourism and culture. The city has about 30,000 inhabitants and is home to one of the oldest Christian communities in the world.

Bethlehem, like many other cities in the Palestinian territories, faces a high level of unemployment and poverty, which are the result of the long-running conflict with Israel, restrictions on movement, weak economic development and dependence on tourism. Tourism is often disrupted by the security situation and military operations in the region.

The war between Israel and Palestine has dramatically worsened the situation of vulnerable groups in the Palestinian territories, including Bethlehem and the wider West Bank region. The conflict has caused mass displacement, hunger, a lack of health care and destruction of infrastructure, with long-term and devastating consequences for the whole of society. As a result of the war, closed borders, declining tourism and high unemployment, large numbers of people in and around Bethlehem have found themselves in a critical situation. Families have lost their income because they can work neither in Israel nor in the tourism sector. Children from broken families, orphans and the elderly are suffering from a shortage of basic food and medicine. People are begging for humanitarian aid in order to survive. Children, women, the elderly and people with disabilities are among the most at-risk groups. Every day they struggle with poverty and uncertainty. Thank you for helping us meet their most basic need — to give them bread.

The Salesians of Don Bosco have a bakery in Bethlehem that gives away 1,600 loaves of bread every day to those who need it most — families in need and institutions that care for children, young people, the elderly, orphans and people with disabilities. Thanks to your generosity, 13,976 € were raised. This help was made possible thanks to you — donors with generous hearts. Thank you for giving a loaf of bread to people in need through our Lebo chleba treba (Because we need bread) collection. Your help means much more than just bread on the table for the people of Bethlehem. It is proof that someone is thinking of them and standing by them even in the hardest of times. For every gift, we THANK YOU on behalf of these people.
