Candle-Making by People with Disabilities in Damascus

When education brings hope to the most vulnerable

The SAVIO training centre in Damascus, Syria, makes practical skills accessible even to people with disabilities. A fine example is the candle-making course, which time after time draws many participants living with health challenges. Yesterday the opening of another such course took place, alongside the distribution of tools and materials for candle-making. The Greek Catholic Patriarch also attended the formal opening, accepting the invitation to this warm occasion. The course is run thanks to SAVIO o.z.

The SAVIO training centre in Damascus

The SAVIO training centre in Damascus was set up in 2022 thanks to our project, with financial support from SlovakAid. Since then, hundreds of people have been trained here in practical-skills courses, gaining a foothold on the labour market. The centre stands out not only because it constantly adapts its course offering to the current demands of the job market, but also because it dedicates itself to those who are most vulnerable — the poor, the young, women, internally displaced people, and also people with disabilities. In this way it brings hope of a better life to those who need it most.
