The experience of our volunteers Patrícia and Samuel Parlagi resonated with the panel of the national volunteer centre to such an extent that in just one week, on 24 March 2026, they will take part in the “Srdce na dlani” (Heart on the Palm) gala evening in Prešov, where the most powerful volunteer stories from across Slovakia will be presented and honoured.

Paťka and Samo spent 11 months as missionary volunteers at the Bosco Boys Langata rehabilitation centre in Nairobi. They chose to give their time to children who had not been as fortunate as themselves. During the mission they worked on the upbringing of boys who had ended up on the street because of difficult conditions, parental neglect, or the dream of a better future.

“During the mission, no two days were alike. There are many stories — and now we laugh about them. Of course, we faced difficulties too, but as a married couple we could get through them together. Now all that is left for us is to keep all these experiences and insights in our memory, write them on our hearts, and after returning home — taught by them — to live, to spread awareness of the missions and of any kind of help that changes not only the lives of those it is given to, but our lives as well.“ Samuel reflects.
