The 12th edition of the Tehlička public collection for 2017 was registered with the Slovak Ministry of the Interior in the register of public collections under number SVS-OVS2-2016/033933.

The gross proceeds of the collection amount to €154,350.46. The cost of running the collection was 17.49 percent. The net proceeds of €127,352.10 are earmarked to support the education of approximately 4,600 children from refugee camps. Education will help them process the traumas of war and prepare them for the reality after the conflict ends in the future. Because the future is the only thing we can give them together.

The collection directly involved more than 110 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools and almost 50 youth and other organizations in villages and towns throughout Slovakia. All participating schools and organizations were sent promotional and background materials, which were used not only for the collection campaign but also as a basis for education and awareness-raising in the area of development aid. As part of the collection, with our consent, schools carried out their own activities that served its purpose.

From the net proceeds of the collection €127,352.10 the following activities were supported:

Humanitarian food aid for families in the camp for internally displaced persons, Juba-Gumbo

Food distribution was provided for 2,020 families in the camp for internally displaced persons in Juba, in the Gumbo area, as well as for 500 of the most vulnerable families living in communities around the camp. Food was distributed during the critical period at the end of each month from June to August 2018. The internally displaced persons in the camp elected their representatives and split into groups of 50 households per group. They agreed on the effective redistribution of the food items. The displaced persons came to the storage area in groups of 50, where during the distribution of food those in charge checked their registration cards, marked and stamped by the camp leadership. On the basis of the documentation presented, they then proceeded to assign the monthly food ration, consisting of maize flour, beans, cooking oil and salt. In this way, 2,055 50-kg sacks of maize flour, 285 50-kg sacks of beans, 190 20-litre canisters of oil and 150 5-kg boxes of salt were distributed.

Support for education at the primary school for internally displaced persons, Juba-Gumbo

Thanks to the collection, 1,200 internally displaced children and 400 children from local communities received a school uniform as well as school supplies they could not otherwise afford. The school supplies included notebooks — the number for each child depended on the number of subjects — a pen and a pencil. With the help of other partners, breakfast in the form of oatmeal with milk was also provided for the children for the duration of the project. The implemented project contributed to better results for the children at school (77% of children achieve excellent results), a higher number of children at school (compared with 2018, when there were 1,200 children at the school, in 2019 up to 2,352 children were enrolled in primary school), as well as to better attendance.

Accompanying educational and leisure activities, Juba-Gumbo

The collection supported the implementation of sports and cultural events for children at the primary school for internally displaced persons, as well as educational seminars on the topics of health, hygiene and peace-building. The seminars were carried out in cooperation with the elected representatives of the internally displaced persons in the camp. Thanks to the seminar on health and hygiene, it was possible to improve hygiene in the camp, as well as the system for reporting health problems. The peace-building seminar made it possible to identify shortcomings in the system of internal management in the camp, to create a more effective management structure, to redistribute the tasks and responsibilities among the camp leaders and also to set up commissions dealing with the topics of youth, security and the disadvantaged inhabitants of the camp.

Material provision of the primary school for internally displaced persons, Juba-Gumbo

From the net proceeds of the collection, the equipping of classrooms and the teachers’ room with the necessary furniture at the school for internally displaced persons in Juba-Gumbo was also supported. The furniture purchased included desks, tables, benches and bookshelves.
