The 14th edition of the Tehlička public collection for 2019 was registered with the Slovak Ministry of the Interior in the register of public collections on 7 November 2018 under number SVS-OVS2-2018/34156.
The gross proceeds of the collection amount to €137,141.07. The cost of running the collection was 21.68%. The net proceeds were €107,409.57. The collection was carried out in order to help repair flood-damaged homes in the Indian state of Kerala, or to rebuild from scratch those that had been completely destroyed. The project aimed to give priority to families from economically weaker areas living below the poverty line. The SAVIO civic association cooperates with the local Salesians of Don Bosco, who have been working in Kerala since the beginning of the 20th century.
The collection directly involved 95 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, 22 SDB youth centres and other communities, 13 parishes and also 2 companies in villages and towns throughout Slovakia. All participants were sent promotional and background materials, which were used not only for the collection campaign but also as a basis for education and awareness-raising in the area of development aid. As part of the collection, with our consent, schools carried out their own activities that served its purpose.
In cooperation with the development organization BREADS, based in Bangalore, India, the collection made it possible to provide assistance to people in the Indian state of Kerala who were hit by devastating floods in August 2018. They were the worst floods in the past 100 years — they claimed the lives of nearly 500 people, around 24,000 people were placed in humanitarian camps, there were 35 landslides, the water devastated 57,000 hectares of agricultural land, destroyed 20,000 homes and thousands of people thus lost the roof over their heads. Thanks to the Tehlička 2019 collection, it was possible — through construction or reconstruction — to give 23 poor families their homes back. In the first phase of the project, 9 new houses were built and 3 houses were repaired. In the second phase, another 5 houses were built and 6 houses were repaired. Altogether, 14 houses were built and 9 houses repaired.
The most needy recipients of aid were chosen for the project — people who were not only left without a home but who, because of the floods, also lost their source of livelihood. Aid was provided to families from economically weak areas who would not have survived the consequences of the floods without external help. After the families were selected for the project, a planning meeting was organized with representatives of all 23 families. Before construction work began, an agreement on the provision of a grant was signed. The construction and reconstruction of the family homes was carried out by partner companies under strict oversight and consistent monitoring by the partner organization BREADS. In providing the aid, coordination was ensured among the regional government, the local self-government and the non-profit sector, in order to avoid duplicating the support provided to the final recipients. The families themselves also took part in the construction and reconstruction of the homes according to their abilities.
